The S&P 500 Index is a metric gauging the market performance of 500 large US companies. It acts as a great proxy for understanding the market overall.
I found data (as of 19/1/23) on the ~500 companies that constitute the S&P 500. This is a snapshot of the data:
These are the various industries of companies and their counts.
Below are the counts of the sub-industries companies belong to.
There has been a marked change in the sub-industry makeup over time. This is what the sub-industry breakdown looks like if I consider just the companies added before 2000.
Multi-utilities and Industrial Machinery dominate here. Whereas, considering companies added in or after 2000 (as seen below), the dominant sub-industry is Health Care Equipment.
Below, I break down the counts of the year in which companies were added. The S&P 500 index was formed in 1957, hence, it has such a high count.
This is what the chronologically ordered graph starting the year 2000 looks like:
Very good analysis!
Good data presentation Beta. You shall further add to your analysis based on the data extracted. Eg. In the recent past, the index has become more dynamic as more companies are getting added as compared to before yr 2000. Infact, after 2015, atleast 15 new companies have got added every year.
